【Objectives】Encourage, inspire, assist and promote the National Red Cross Societies to carry out various forms of humanitarian activities aimed at preventing and alleviating human suffering, thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of world peace.

【Members】192 members.

【Head of the Organization】The principal persons in charge is the president and the secretary general. The president is the highest head of IFRC, and the secretary general is the chief executive. The current president is Francesco Rocca (Italian), who took office in November 2017 for a term of 4 years. The current Secretary-General is Jagan Chapagain (Nepal), who took office in February 2020.

【Organization】(1) General Assembly: The highest authority, composed of representatives of its National Society members, held every two years. (2) Governing Board: the highest decision-making body during the closing of the assembly, consisting of the chairman, 5 vice-chairmen and 20 members of the National Society, (3) Secretariat: responsible for daily work. The Secretary-General is the Chief Executive, recommended by the leadership committee and appointed by the chairman.

【Main activities】Promote the principles of the Red Cross Movement, disaster relief, disaster preparedness, and cooperate with the Red Cross or Red Crescent Societies of various countries to carry out various humanitarian work.

【Representatives in China】The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies established the East Asia Regional Representative Office in Beijing in February 2000. 【China’s Relationship with IFRC】

On November 12-15, 2014, the 19th General Assembly of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies was held in Sydney, Australia. The meeting elected the new chairman, vice-chairmen and members of the governing board. H.E. Mr. Zhao Baige, the then executive vice president of China Red Cross Society, was elected as the vice chairman of the organization's Asia Pacific region.

On November 6-11, 2017, the 21st General Assembly of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies was held in Antalya, Turkey. The conference elected the new chairman, vice-chairman and members of the governing board. H.E. Mr. Chen Zhu, president of China Red Cross Society, successfully re-elected as the vice chairman of the organization for a term of 4 years.

From August 31 to September 2, 2019, H.E. Mr. Francesco Rocca, President of IFRC, attended the opening ceremony of the International Academy of Red Cross and Red Crescent in China and the opening ceremony of the 11th National Congress of China Red Cross Society. H.E. Mr. Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, met with President Rocca during his visit.

On December 9-12, 2019, the 33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent was held in Geneva, with the theme "Action Now, Shape the Future". H.E. Mr. Chen Zhu, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and President of China Red Cross Society, and H.E. Mr. Chen Xu, Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland, separately led delegations of China Red Cross Society and Chinese Government to attend the meeting and delivered speeches. The meeting discussed and adopted many resolutions on issues such as protection of victims of armed conflicts under international humanitarian law, paying attention to vulnerable groups, and trust building in humanitarian actions.
