Question: Rupert Colville, Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, remarked on 13 August that the High Commissioner condemns any form of violence and that Hong Kong officials can be seen firing tear gas canisters into crowded, enclosed areas and directly at individual protesters on multiple occasions, creating a considerable risk of death or serious injury. How does China comment on this ?

Answer: The statement by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights turns a blind eye to the facts and shows bias and indulgence towards the rioters. It amounts to an interference in China’s domestic affairs. China has made stern representations with the OHCHR. We urge it to abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and stop interfering in the affairs of Hong Kong in any form or making irresponsible, wrongful remarks.

The demonstrations in Hong Kong recently morphed into extremely violent and illegal activities. In particular, there have been increasing attacks on police officers by mobsters brandishing dangerous weapons, which are grave violent offenses. It brutally tramples on the rule of law and public order of Hong Kong, endangers the life of ordinary citizens, and seriously challenges Hong Kong’s peace and prosperity. No responsible government on earth would allow this to happen unchecked. We firmly support the government of the HK SAR in administering Hong Kong in accordance with the law and the Hong Kong Police Force in resolutely enforcing the law to stop violence and turmoil and bring the violent criminal offenders to justice.
