Statement by the Chinese Delegation in Exercising the Right of Reply under the Item 4 General Debate at the 49th Session of the Human Rights Council
2022-03-22 18:02

(March 22)

Madam Vice President,

The United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Finland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, the EU and some anti-China NGOs abused the platform of the Human Rights Council to deliberately spread disinformation and smear China, which China strongly opposes and categorically rejects.

At present, China’s Xinjiang and Tibet enjoy prosperity, stability, ethnic unity and religious harmony, and people of all ethnic groups live and work in peace and contentment. Residents in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region enjoy a wide-range of rights and freedoms according to law. Rumors and slanders by these countries cannot change the fact that the Chinese people are fully enjoying human rights and leading a happy life. The lies and disinformation against China will eventually end up in the dustbin of history.

The countries in question have serious human rights violations. The United States physically slaughtered, forcibly expelled and culturally assimilated American Indians throughout its history, committing serious crime of genocide and crime against humanity. The United Kingdom perpetrated countless crimes in its colonial history and yet refuses to wake up from its colonial dreams. Systemic racism and racial discrimination are found in both the US and the UK. Ignoring the rights to life and health of their populations, they responded passively to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which nearly one million Americans and more than 160,000 British people died. They killed innocent civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, bearing a debt of blood. This is what “defenders” of human rights truly are.

In history, France colonized African countries, plundered their natural resources and killed civilians. The German military forces slaughtered more than 100,000 civilians in its African colonies at the beginning of the last century. The legalization of sex industry in the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, and the Netherlands has led to the trafficking of large numbers of women and girls who are subject to sexual exploitation and violence. In stark contrast to their rhetoric of “gender equality” and “combating violence against women”, the extent of their hypocrisy is nothing short of appalling.

“Comfort women” were forcibly recruited by the Japanese army during the Second World War, and Japan still tries to deny these heinous crimes. Australia massacred and forcibly assimilated aboriginals, and Australian soldiers wantonly killed civilians in overseas military operations with impunity to this day.

China urges the above-mentioned countries to reflect seriously on and resolve their own human rights problems, stop using lies and disinformation to smear and vilify other countries, and stop serving their own political interests under the pretext of human rights.

Thank you, Madam Vice President.
