Mr. President,

China has taken note of the report of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka.

China appreciates the efforts made by Sri Lanka to promote and protect human rights, including the establishment of the Commission for Truth,Unity and Reconciliation to promote reconciliation and reconstruction, the active cooperation with human rights mechanisms, the fight against terrorism, the safeguarding of the rights of vulnerable groups, the promotion of economic recovery, and the improvement of people's living standards. China will, as always, firmly support the Sri Lankan in maintaining political stability, focusing on economic construction, achieving national ownership and sustainable development, and creating favourable conditions for the country's economic and social development and the improvement of its people's living standards.

China has always believed that differences in the field of human rights should be dealt with through dialogue and cooperation, and opposes the politicization of human rights issues. Human Rights Council Resolution 51/1 ignores the efforts and achievements of the Government of Sri Lanka in the promotion and protection of human rights, disregards the will of the people of Sri Lanka, and interferes in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka under the guise of human rights, which is a typical example of politicization of human rights, and the Council should not contribute to this dangerous trend. China urges some member states to respect the path of human rights development independently chosen by the people of Sri Lanka, abandon interference in the internal affairs of other countries and political pressure, and return to the right path of dialogue and cooperation.

Thank you, Mr. President.
