Distinguished Commissioner Yu Yanhong of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine,
Director Pisano, Ladies and gentlemen,
Good afternoon! It is such a pleasure to host the event of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) by the end of October, a season of harvest. While inviting you to experience the unique artistic and cultural charm of TCM, I would like to take this opportunity to share some of my thoughts.
First, inheritance. TCM is a treasure of ancient Chinese science and a great creation of the Chinese people. President Xi Jinping emphasized the need to “protect, inherit, and develop the valuable heritage of traditional Chinese medicine gifted to us by our ancestors.” Even today, we could all benefit from the philosophies of traditional Chinese medicine, such as “the laws of Nature govern all things”, “humanity shall seek harmony with the Nature” and “to address both the symptoms and the root causes of a disease”. They reflect the wisdom of ancient Chinese people and the core values of Chinese culture, and could help us improve our health, wellness, and stay away from diseases. That’s why China is committed to carrying forward the culture of traditional Chinese medicine and fully harnessing its unique role.
Second, innovation. It is the driving force of a country’s progress and prosperity. China values innovation, and has come a long way in reforming and developing itself through the spirit of innovation. In July, the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to “improve the mechanism for the inheritance, innovation, and development of traditional Chinese medicine”. By emphasizing technological innovation, this decision will turbocharge innovation of TCM, and bring new momentum for researches such as AI-driven development of TCM and the exploration of new herbal medicines.
Third, cooperation and inclusiveness. Civilizations become more vibrant through exchange and mutual learning. With an open mindset, the Chinese government is committed to fostering cooperation and mutual learning between TCM and modern medicine. While encouraging traditional medicine to “go global” through international cultural exchanges and sharing its principles, practices and experiences with countries around the world, China is also drawing strength from medical practices of the world and the latest medical researches. TCM belongs not only to China but also to the world. This is why we are holding this event here today.
Ladies and gentlemen, friends,
In conclusion, I hope that this event today would contribute to our common well-being and the sustainable development of humankind. Thank you!
