H.E. Ambassador Chen Xu Attends the 115th Session of the IOM Council

On November 27,2024, H.E. Ambassador Chen Xu, Head of the Chinese Government Delegation, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland, attended the 115thSession of the IOM Council and made statement during the general debate on behalf of China, expounding China's position on migration issues.

Chen said that global migration governance is facing multiple challenges. The international community should uphold true multilateralism. Countries of origin, transit and destinationof migrants should strengthen dialogue, cooperation and coordination. Developed countries should fulfill their commitments of development aid and climate aid to developing countries, enhance their development resilience and ability to deal with migration issues, and eliminate the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures. All parties should view immigrants with an open attitude, oppose stigmatization, and combat discrimination and hate speech. Countriesof destinationshould ensure that regular migration pathways and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of immigrants. The IOM should equally expand cooperation with emerging technology companies in various countries, make good use of emerging technologies to benefit migrant groups, and actively bridge the North-South digital divide in global migration governance.


Chen emphasized that as the second largest assessed contributor to the IOM, China will continue to support the work of the IOM, promote pragmatic cooperation, and make greater contributions to better protecting the welfare of migrants and achieving orderly global population mobility.
