(March 9, 2022)

Mr. President,

I am honored to speak on behalf of a group of countries. We are deeply concerned with the growing crimes of trafficking in persons, especially children.

Trafficking in persons is a serious violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms, harmful particularly to children. Many children are trafficked into “sweatshops”, enslaved in households or forced into prostitution, becoming the victims of sexual slavery, sexual exploitation and forced labor. The sufferings, discrimination and violence they experienced often remain throughout their life. Systemic racism, racial discrimination and hate crimes in some countries have exacerbated the trafficking in children.

We call upon countries concerned to ratify relevant international human rights conventions, take vigorous measures to combat all crimes of human trafficking, including trafficking in children, and bring the perpetrators to justice. Protection, support and assistance should be provided to the victims, and concrete measures should be taken to guarantee children’s basic rights including the right to education. We call upon the international community to strengthen coordination at the national, regional and global levels, adopt a “zero tolerance” approach to trafficking in children, and prohibit and punish related crimes. The Human Rights Council, the OHCHR and relevant special procedures should pay more attention to and take necessary actions on issues including the trafficking in and sexual exploitation of children.

Thank you, Mr. President.
