Statement by H.E.Mr. CHEN Xu under the GD of Item 4 at the 58th Session of the Human Rights Council

(20 March 2025)

Mr. President,

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the UN, but the multilateral system with the UN at its core is suffering shock and the global human rights governance is facing challenges. Some countries interfere in other countries under the pretext of human rights and blatantly apply unilateral coercive measures. They turn a blind eye to their own human rights violations and arbitrarily naming and criticizing human rights situation of other countries and seriously undermining the credibility of the UN human rights system.

We support Jordan, Venezuela, Uganda, Pakistan and Iran for speaking on behalf of a group of countries. We particularly express concerns at large-scale strikes at Gaza. We hope that the ceasefire agreement will be effectively implemented to prevent greater humanitarian crises.

China always holds a people-centered human rights philosophy with people's interests at the starting point and destination, Xinjiang and Tibet enjoy prosperity and stability, ethnic unity and religious harmony. People in Hong Kong enjoy extensive rights and freedoms in accordance with the law. China punishes criminal acts and cooperates with other states to combat cross-border crimes in accordance with law and common practices, and such practices brook no wanton criticism.

The National People's Congress of China and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference have just concluded, the Delegates spoke for the voice of the people and include their ideas in the top design of national development. This is the most vivid embodiment of people’s democracy. We advocate that all countries rebuild trust through constructive dialogue on the basis of equality and mutual respect and continue to make efforts to promote a more just equitable and inclusive global human rights governance system.

Thank you, Mr. President.
