On October 24, the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva held a celebration event on the establishment of Commemoration Day of Taiwan’s Restoration. The event is attended by around 100 participants, including the Vice Minister of Economy, Finance and Foreign Trade of Venezuela, permanent representatives and senior diplomats from over 30 friendly countries, officials from the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations, members of the academia, and representatives of Chinese staff members working in international organizations.

Ambassador Chen Xu said in his speech that China’s National People’s Congress adopted a decision to legally designate October 25 as the Commemoration Day of Taiwan’s Restoration. On October 25, 1945, the ceremony to accept Japan’s surrender in Taiwan Province of the China war theater of the Allied powers was held in Taibei (Taipei), marking the restoration of China’s sovereignty over Taiwan and the Penghu Islands. Documents of international law such as the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation affirm China’s sovereignty over Taiwan and form an integral part of the post-war international order. The designation of this Commemoration Day is in line with the spirit of UNGA Resolution 2758, and also a strong embodiment of one-China principle which is shared by the international community.
At present, the UN-centered international system has encountered mounting headwinds, such as protectionism, unilateralism, withdrawn and cutting funds. The best way to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations is to safeguard the outcomes of World War II and the post-war international order. The Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China deliberated and adopted China’s 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development. China will continue to focus on running its own affairs well, and pursue shared opportunities and common development with all countries around the world.
Participants appreciated the Chinese side for hosting the event, noting that the establishment of the “Commemoration Day of Taiwan’s Restoration” was both timely and significant. They reaffirmed that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 brooks no denial and reiterated their firm support for the one-China principle.
