On June 16, 2026, Li Xiaomei, Minister and Deputy Head of the Chinese Delegation, clarified China’s position at the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Li Xiaomei stated that global human rights governance is currently facing challenges. On the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Human Rights Council, it is imperative to advocate respect for the human rights development paths independently chosen by all countries, and the OHCHR should play a constructive role. China recently released the fifth edition of the National Human Rights Action Plan. Its own progress in human rights has brought stability and certainty to the advancement of the global human rights cause. At present, Xinjiang and Xizang enjoy prosperity and stability, the legitimate rights and interests of the people in Hong Kong are fully guaranteed. The Law of the People’s Republic of China on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress is formulated to protect the equal rights of all ethnic groups and promote their common development and prosperity.
Li Xiaomei also refuted the false and unfounded remarks made by a small number of countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia and the Czech Republic. She pointed out that these countries have a poor record on human rights issues yet refuse to conduct any self-reflection or accountability. China urges these countries to stop politicizing and instrumentalizing human rights, and to take concrete actions to safeguard the credibility and integrity of the multilateral human rights mechanism.
